Jackson County Human Resource Director shall lead strategic efforts and make operational decisions in all areas of personnel management including employment and recruiting, training and development, classification and compensation, benefits, employee relations, labor negotiations, personnel records and health and safety. Recruitment procedures will be implemented through the Jackson County Human Resources Department. All applicants applying for a position with Jackson County must apply online. Applications will only be accepted for positions advertised as vacant. Law Enforcement has special provisions for recruitment outlined in County Code - Chapter 5.02 and 5.07.

An existing regular full-time County employee may fill a vacancy subject to position qualifications and the County interview and selection process. The Human Resources Department will send a County-wide email to all County employees notifying them of the vacancy. Interested candidates will be required to follow the application instructions set forth by the Human Resources Department. External recruiting procedures will be used when positions are not filled through an internal selection process. Vacancies not filled through internal recruitment procedures shall be posted and advertise on multiple platforms to assure that the general public is aware of the employment opportunity.

PROJECT / PROGRAMS or CONTRACTED SERVICES

This employment category is a special class of temporary employees who are employed in instances where the position has some sort of condition such as a time limitation or funding contingency. In many instances, the need for a project employee will arise out of a funding source that was unforeseen in the budget process. Employees in this category may work a regular work schedule for the duration of the project and receive other benefits of a regular employee which are required by law (such as WRS, ICI, etc.) This type of employee has no expectation of continued employment, and the position ceases at the end of the project, renewal period, funding source, or an established end date.

ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT

Administrative Assistant(s) and Support Staff provide essential clerical, receptionist, and record-keeping services, often handling sensitive information and acting as the public's first point of contact. These position(s) are under the supervision and management of the Sheriff and Chief Deputy.

COMMUNICATION (E911)

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office Emergency Communications Center (ECC) is the designated Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) for Jackson County. A Communications Officer is a non-sworn law enforcement position that works in the ECC, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The Communications Officers provide a vital link between the public and emergency services. They answer emergency 911 and non-emergency calls and then determine the necessary services that would need to be sent to the calls for service (law enforcement, fire, and EMS). The work is fast-paced, constantly monitoring radio channels, managing Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems, and conducting database checks such as NCIC/CIB queries.      

PATROL

A Deputy Sheriff works under the authority of the Sheriff to conduct initial investigations, make arrests, serve warrants, and perform community-oriented policing related activities. A Deputy Sheriff enforces state laws and county ordinances, patrols assigned areas, responds to emergency calls, and investigates crimes and traffic accidents to maintain public safety.

CORRECTIONS DIVISION (JAIL)

The Corrections Division (Jail) works under the authority of the Sheriff, to take the charge and custody of the jail maintained by the county, including any portion of the jail that is used by the County in a joint government building, and the persons in the jail, and keep the persons in the jail personally or by a deputy or jailer. Correctional Officers are a non-sworn law enforcement position that is responsible for maintaining order and safety within the jail facility, ensuring the well-being of inmates, and fostering a secure environment for staff, visitors, and inmates. This is a vital public service role where you will contribute to the fairness, safety, and integrity of the correctional system while upholding the highest standards of professionalism.
