Tobacco Prevention Program

The Jackson County Tobacco-Free Coalition has been in existence since 2001.
It was started with funding through the State of WI Master Settlement Agreement
secured in the late 1990's. Jackson County Public Health has been a key
participant in the coalition since the beginning and continues to be an active
member. Since 2001, funding at the state level has been severely reduced.
Despite the funding situation, tobacco use remains the number one cause of
preventable death in the United States. Some programs and initiatives that
the Jackson County Tobacco-Free Coalition has been involved with include the
TATU (Teens Against Tobacco Use) program (where teens talk to 4th graders about
the dangers of tobacco), supporting tobacco cessation classes held bi-monthly
at Black River Memorial Hospital, and support and recognition of
businesses/restaurants that are smoke free during the Great American
Smoke-out in November of each year. This coalition meets monthly and
continues to address tobacco related issues facing our community.
