Juvenile Delinquency/JIPS Referrals

Juvenile intake workers have the lead responsibility to screen police referrals, conduct intake inquires, and authorize custody of juveniles not released by law enforcement.  They also provide recommendations to the District Attorney’s Office, Corporation Counsel or City Attorney regarding each case.  Delinquency referrals include youth age 10 through 16 years old who have violated criminal codes, state or federal.  JIPS (Juveniles in Need of Protective Services) cases are juveniles under the age of 18 and are truant from home or school, uncontrolled at home or children under the age of 10 that have committed delinquent acts.  Social Workers continue with cases focusing on protecting the community, impose accountability for the juveniles, provide rehabilitation services and comply with the victim’s rights.

Child Protective Services

The DHHS is the lead agency to accept reports of suspected child abuse or neglect, screen the reports and investigate the allegations or refer to other community services.  The agency works in conjunction with law enforcement on most investigations.  Agency workers are also sometimes assisted with investigations of Ho-Chunk children and families by The Indian Child Welfare (ICW) staff.  Social workers continue with cases through all phases of the investigation and court process including dispositional services with families that may continue on an ongoing basis.
