The District Attorney for Jackson County is elected at the General Election held on even numbered years for a two year term. The District
Attorney must be licensed to practice law in the State of Wisconsin. The duties and responsibilities of the office are to handle all criminal matter for the State of Wisconsin and Jackson County when action
occurs in Jackson County.
Criminal matters include reviewing investigative reports of the various law enforcement agencies of the county and various administrative agencies of the State; to determine whether
there is sufficient evidence to warrant prosecution for any crime. After a determination is made that a specific crime has been committed and there is sufficient evidence, the District Attorney as the chief law
enforcement officer of the county represents the people of the state and county in the presentation of the evidence of the crime to the Judge or jury to determine the defendant's guilt or innocence. Whenever complaints
are made upon unfounded fact or there is insufficient evidence or guilt, it is the District Attorney's duty to protect the innocent from false, malicious or unfounded prosecution.
