The Coroner's office investigates all suspicious
or violent deaths including those caused by auto
accidents. Deaths which are unexplained, unusual
or suspicious, homicides, suicides, or those following
abortion, poisoning, or due to accidents, as well as
deaths where the deceased has not been seen by a
physician for more than 30 days, become coroner
cases. After viewing the body at the scene of
the death, a decision is made as to further
investigation. The Coroner's office may order
and autopsy and present the results, if foul play or a
criminal act is suspected, to the District Attorney's
office, at which time inquest hearings for suspicious
deaths can be ordered.
